Why are tray and cover quantities separate?
Eaton lists covers for both straight sections and fittings in its KwikSplice range. The cited flanged-cover description states that cover clamps are ordered separately. This is a specific product inclusion, so confirm the actual quoted range and configuration instead of assuming every manufacturer packages covers the same way.
Data Center Estimating is independent and is not affiliated with Eaton. Cover selection, heat effects and installation requirements belong to the approved design and manufacturer instructions. This worksheet does not decide where covers are required.

How should the covered extent be recorded?
Identify each continuous covered extent on the current route drawing. Use the approved boundary around fittings, changes in width and cover type. Do not count the same transition as both a complete straight cover and a separate fitting cover.
| Field | Record | Review |
|---|---|---|
| Extent | Route ID and start/end references | Exclude uncovered portions |
| Straight cover | Required length, width and type | Keep separate from tray length |
| Fitting cover | Matching tee, bend or cross cover | Match the actual variant |
| Attachment | Approved clamp or fixing basis | Do not invent spacing |
| Supply unit | Stock length or defined item | Check permitted cuts and usable stock |
| Inclusions | Supplier cover and accessory rows | Deduct only evidenced inclusions |
What changes when only part of the route is covered?
Illustrative example. An invented design has 30 ft of straight tray in route A and 20 ft in route B. Its approved schedule calls for 18 ft of straight cover on A and none on B. Total straight tray is 50 ft, while the measured straight-cover requirement is 18 ft. Using total tray length for covers would add 32 ft not supported by that schedule.
A separately specified bend has its own cover item and is excluded from those straight lengths. This example does not convert 18 ft into a stock-piece order, prescribe cutting, or establish a clamp count. Those require the approved item lengths, installation basis and supplier inclusions.
What should the bid review reconcile?
Compare the measured cover schedule with the supplier's exact line items. A quote for tray with splice hardware is not evidence that covers or their attachments are included. Keep uncertain cover extents or accessory inclusions as explicit scope questions rather than a hidden percentage.
After a design change, reopen both the covered extents and any fitting-cover variants. The estimator prices the approved scope; the responsible engineer selects and approves the arrangement. No product performance or installation suitability is certified by this takeoff.
Common questions
What else should the bid team know?
Should every foot of tray become a foot of cover?
Only when the approved design actually requires that coverage.
Are cover clamps always included?
No. Check the exact product and quotation inclusions.
Does measured cover length equal the stock order?
Not necessarily. Reconcile stock lengths, permitted cuts and the actual item basis.
