What distinction is visible in the manufacturer information?
Siemens describes plug-in outlets as part of its modular busway system and separately describes bus plugs, including metering and surge-protection variants. A connection position on a run and a selected device at that position are different records.
Data Center Estimating is independent and is not affiliated with Siemens. The current approved system drawings and supplier schedule control the actual parts, compatibility and installation constraints. A generic outlet count does not prove that every possible position can be used simultaneously.

How should the position-to-device register work?
Give each position a controlled reference linked to its run and drawing. Then identify the scheduled device, if any, and the evidence for the assigned status. Keep covers and other required provisions within the actual supplier scope rather than guess their supply basis.
| Register field | Takeoff treatment | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Position reference | Count connection locations separately | Approved run layout |
| Installed device | Count the exact scheduled unit | Tap-off schedule |
| Reserved position | Do not invent a present device | Approved future-scope note |
| Device variant | Retain rating and functional identity | Supplier selection |
| Other provisions | Check actual inclusion or separate item | Quoted system boundary |
| Open position | Record unresolved status | Named clarification owner |
Why is subtracting device count from outlet count insufficient?
Illustrative example. A fictional layout has six identified outlet positions. The approved schedule assigns four installed tap-off units, one reserved position and one position whose status is unresolved. The device takeoff is four identified units, not six. The remaining two positions do not become two interchangeable spare devices.
Keep the reserved and unresolved entries distinct. The latter needs a clarification before pricing is finalized. The example assumes no product dimensions, electrical ratings, utilization limit, required cover quantity or permitted installation method. Those depend on the selected system and approved documents.
What closes the quantity review?
Reconcile position references with the device schedule, one-line and supplier return. If a revision adds a position but not a device, retain that distinction in the quantity change record. If it adds a device to a reserved position, record the actual variant and affected scope.
This worksheet supplements the wider busway route and accessory takeoff; it does not size the distribution system or approve a connection. Engineering sign-off is performed only by the registered engineer on the job.
Common questions
What else should the bid team know?
Does every visible outlet require a new bus plug?
Only where the approved scope requires one.
Does an unused position prove usable spare capacity?
No. Capacity and compatibility require technical confirmation.
May an unresolved position be labeled reserved?
No. Keep the uncertainty and obtain a disposition.
